Playing a major role in the connective tissues that make up tendons, ligaments, skin and muscles, collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It helps to provide the skin with structure, as well as strengthening bones and whilst it is possible to increase your collagen in take through your diet by consuming foods like pork skin and bone broth, supplements are becoming increasingly popular.

Collagen has a variety of health benefits, including:

Improving skin health

Collagen comprises about 80% of the skins dry weight, making it a major structural component. As we age, our bodies produce less collagen which can lead to dry skin and signs of ageing – such as wrinkles. However studies have found that supplementing with collagen peptides may help slow the aging of skin by improving elasticity. One study of women found that taking collagen for 8 weeks improve skin dryness and increased skin elasticity, compared to those who didn’t take a supplements.

The anti-ageing effects of collagen supplements have been attributed to its ability to stimulate skin metabolism and encourage the body to produce its own collagen.

Promoting nail growth and health

Another sign of ageing is suffering from cracked or chipped nails, as well as nail peeling and roughness. A recent study showed that after two months of treatment, participants saw a decrease of cracked or chipped nails, whilst also seeing an increase in the speed of nail growth compared to a control group. These participants also saw an improvement in nail peeling.

May relieve joint pain

Collagen helps to maintain cartilage in the body, which protects the joints. As the body produces less collagen as we get older, we are at greater risk of developing degenerative joint disorders such as osteoarthritis. Some studies suggest that collagen supplements may reduce overall joint pain. One study saw adults taking 2 gram of collagen daily for 70 days, the results of this study found that those who took the supplement had a significant reduction in joint pain and were able to engage in more physical activity than those who didn’t take the supplement.

How to take collagen:

Collagen can be found in certain foods such as chicken skin, pork skin, beef and fish; however more research is needed into the effectiveness of collagen-rich food as it needs to be broken down by digestive enzymes into individual amino acids and peptides. Collagen supplements, however, have already been broken down – which is why they are suggested to be absorbed more efficiently than the collagen in foods.
