Bio cultures, also often referred to as ‘probiotics’, are microorganisms that help to balance the bacteria in the gut. An imbalance of bacteria in the digestive system has been linked to many health ailments and diseases, therefore bio cultures have been shown to have promising benefits including weight loss, digestive health and immune function.

Balance bacteria in the digestive system

When there are too many ‘bad’ bacteria in the digestive system, it can lead to issues such as digestive issues, allergies, mental health problems and obesity. Bio cultures are considered ‘good’ bacteria, meaning they can restore the balance and improve health. An imbalance in bacteria can happen due to illness, medication and poor diet.

May improve some mental health conditions

Gut health has been linked to mood and mental health in an increasing number of studies, with studies of both animals and humans finding that bio culture supplements may improve some mental health conditions.

A Review of studies on humans found taking Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus strains for 4-8 weeks may improve OCD, anxiety, depression and memory. Another study also concluded that taking bio culture supplements for 8 weeks resulted in reduced depression and C – reactive protein levels in those with depression, compared to those who did not take the supplements.

Effective for treatment and prevention of diarrhoea

Bio cultures may be best known for their ability to prevent or reduce the severity of diarrhoea, particularly as a side effect of taking antibiotics. There have been numerous studies that suggest bio cultures are associated with the reduced risk of antibiotic diarrhoea, with one study showing they reduced the risk by 42%.

Other studies have shown bio cultures can also help with other forms of diarrhoea, not related to antibiotics. A review of studies found that on average, certain strains of bio cultures can reduce the duration of infection diarrhoea by 25 hours.

How to benefit from bio cultures

Bio cultures can be found in a number of foods, particularly in fermented dairy products such as yoghurt and milk drinks. It can also be taken in supplement form.
