Nicknamed the ‘King of Bitters’ due to its taste, andrographis has a whole host of benefits. It has been used in ancient Ayurveda healing and traditional Chinese medicines for centuries for its detoxifying affects, however this bitter tasting herb is full of compounds called andrographolides that are thought to be anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antioxidants – making it a popular herb for treating the common cold and flu, as well as supporting healthy joints and bones.
Health Benefits:
Respiratory health
Research shows andrographis paniculata can be beneficial for relieving symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections and is widely used for promoting healthy respiration. One study concluded that Andrographis extract is statistically more effective than a placebo for reducing symptoms.
Immune boosting
Andrographis is traditionally used to strengthen and support the immune system; research suggests this is due to the andrographolide content. One study shows that the herb enhances the immune cells ability to repair tissue and remove cellular debris; andrographolides in andrographis appear to have the ability to regulate and adapt immune responses to bacterial and viral attacks.
Healthy joint and bone support
Studies have shown that andrographolides in andrographis inhibits estrogen deficiency-induced bone loss in mice and therefore may benefit those who suffer with osteoarthritis. The study showed mice treated with andrographis extract had a significant increase in bone mass, trabecular thickness and number, and a decrease in trabecular separation.
